Three-way communication is a critical factor in the partnership between parents, students and the school. Where a partnership exists, it is easier for parents to feel confident about the teaching and learning taking place in the classroom and to solve problems if they arise.
Please note that teachers, whose primary role is teaching, may take up to 48 hours to respond to parent enquiries.
Issues that may cause concern
When issues do arise, it is important to resolve these as soon as possible. These may be particular to your child, or of a more general nature, as follows:
1. Class work, such as:
- Academic progress
- Attitude, behaviour and participation
- Homework
2. Social and emotional issues such as:
- Physical development and well-being
- Attendance
- Special events and celebrations
- Connection with teachers and other students socially and emotionally
3. Concerns relating to the subject area such as:
- Subject content
- Teaching
- Learning environment
4. School issues such as:
- General student behaviour
- Pastoral care for students
- School policies and procedures
- Conduct of staff
What can you do if you have a problem?
The flow chart (to right) illustrates the process that should be adopted for parents who have any problem with school operations. In general, the procedure to be followed will be:
- For issues particular to your child, contact the Subject Teacher, Advocate Teacher or Year Co-ordinator to discuss your concerns. This is best done by making an appointment through the school office. In special circumstances, appointments can be made with the School Psychologist or Chaplain.
- If the issue has not been resolved, then speak with the Head of Learning Area or the Deputy Principal (depending on the issue) who will assist you to resolve your concerns.
- If your concern relates to more general subject or school issues, contact the Head of Learning Area, Manager Student Services or the Deputy Principal.
Formal complaints
Please note the procedure indicated above is to be followed in all instances of informal concerns. For formal
concerns or complaints, a separate Complaints Management policy is available on request from the school.
