Social Science Learning Area

Perth Modern School offers a unique opportunity for students to experience the widest range of Humanities and Social Science disciplines offered by any school across the state.  Seven disciplines are available: Accounting and Finance, Ancient History, Economics, Geography, Modern History, Philosophy and Ethics, and Politics and Law.  Students are introduced to these disciplines in Years 7 to 9, and can select to study them in depth in Years 10 to 12.

Social Science helps students become critical thinkers by encouraging them to develop understanding through processes of social inquiry, environmental appraisal, ethical analysis and the skills to constructively critique various perspectives from past and present contexts.

The Years 7, 8 and 9 curriculum provides students with a comprehensive program which begins with a focus on discrete disciplines and culminates with a differentiated inter-discipline extension program whereby students are required to apply the skills and knowledge they have acquired throughout the year.  The courses incorporate the Australian Curriculum for History utilizing the conceptual framework of World History.

In Year 10 students can select at least one course to study in depth from the six disciplines on offer.  Each course provides rich tasks that enable students to gain deep knowledge and develops a range of skills including essay writing, source analysis, critical thinking, evaluation and problem solving.

Year 11 and 12 students will benefit from the extensive experience of the Social Science Learning Area staff including WACE exam markers, curriculum writers and post-graduate qualifications.

The Social Science Learning Area also runs an extensive extra curricula program including debating, the Philosophon, SCRAM, Mock Trials and UNYouth activities.  Students have been selected to represent the represent Western Australia at the United Nations Youth Association National Conference and debating.  Educational tours undertaken include a Year 9 Tour to Canberra and a Classics Tour.
