Perth Modern Year 10 student Virgina Horn is about to embark on a six-week trip through Europe that is set develop her sailing appetite to compete at the elite level.

Virginia, 14, is one of six Western Australian students selected under the Junior Exchange Sailing Scheme (JESS*) to participate in a World Sailing Championship tour that will visit France, Germany, and Belgium.

A highlight of the tour will be competing in Kieler Week (18 to 26 June), the ISAF Sailing World Cup and world’s biggest annual sailing regatta that attracts the ‘who’s-who’ of the sailing world, boasting 5000 competitors from more than 50 countries competing in 2,000 yachts, dinghies and surfboards.

The festival surrounding Keiler Week is hailed as the biggest summer festival in Northern Europe set to attract three million people over ten days participating in cultural, musical, sporting, political and social activities.

A member of Perth Dinghy Sailing Club, Virginia began sailing as an eight-year-old.

Perth Modern Principal Ms Lois Joll said that she was delighted for Virginia to have this opportunity to compete in an event of this calibre.

* JESS is a youth sailing initiative administered under the auspices of Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.
