Perth Modern School Year 12 student Angel Yu is the only Western Australian awarded one of six places in the Australian Team that will compete in the 52nd International Mathematical Olympiad held in the Netherlands from 16 to 24 July 2011.

Angel, 15, was presented with an Australian blazer at Parliament House in Canberra by Federal Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth, Peter Garrett.

Angel is the first Western Australian student to attend an International Mathematical Olympiad since 2001.

The International Mathematical Olympiad is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students. As the largest and oldest Olympiad for the exact sciences, it is regarded as the highest level of Mathematics Competition and this year has students participating from 107 countries.

The International Olympiads are held annually under the auspices of UNESCO. They are regarded as the ‘Olympic Games for Science, Informatics and Mathematics students’.
