Perth Modern school students Lara IIievski, 15, and Kiran Tibballs, 15, have won a silver medal in their respective events at the Australian Junior Athletic Championships held in Perth.

Lara won silver in the under 16 javelin and Kiran won silver in the under 16 1500m. Kiran also made the final of the 800m.

Kiran’s performance to win a silver medal against the nation’s best young 1500m talent was extraordinary as he ran with a fractured foot.

“I fractured my foot in training about two weeks before the championships,” Kiran said.

“I felt it happen and it was very painful. I had been training for months leading up to the event and decided I really wanted to participate even if I didn’t have much of a chance to medal.  So I rested my leg as much as possible. Luckily both my parents are doctors so I was taken really good care of at home.”

“It felt amazing to cross the finish line as the silver medal winner.”

Lara said the secret to her medal success was not to take the competition too seriously and just have fun on the day and see what happens.

“I never enter an event thinking I have to win a medal,” Lara said. “That takes away some of the enjoyment so I just try and have fun on the day and if I end up with a medal that is a bonus.”

Kira and Lara are both aiming for selection in the Australian team for the Youth Olympics being held in Buenos Aires in 2018.
