Perth Modern School student Huda Zaidi has been named WA Young Historian of the Year in the 2017 National History Challenge. Huda, 13, was also named the winner of the Wartime Experience and Year 7 categories.

Huda’s winning work was a museum display that showcased Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War.

Huda said she was inspired to learn more about the Vietnam War and enter the challenge as she had heard it was a very controversial event in Australian history and wanted to understand more about people’s differing perspectives of it.

“The basic question you had to answer was did the event make for a better world,” Huda said.

“I think it is important to study history as we learn about what worked, what didn’t work and the mistakes we have made. The sad thing that I found was that sometimes mistakes were repeated.”

Other winners and finalists from Perth Modern School include Claire Harris who was a finalist for Year 7 and EJ Bitangcol who is the winner of the Year 10 WA category. The Democracy WA Winner is Aryan Singh in Year 9. Georgia Henderson in Year 11 was a finalist in the Year 11/12 category and Ruby Paterson was a finalist in Using Archival Records.

Huda will be flying to Canberra this month for a special ceremony to honour her and the other State winners.
