14 year-old Perth Modern School student Eleanor Lau has been announced the West Australian winner of the prestigious Simpson Prize.

The Simpson Prize honours John Simpson Kirkpatrick, famed for his bravery in helping fellow soldiers under fire at Gallipoli in 1915.

The National competition awards the most outstanding exploration of the ANZAC story in an essay or audio-visual presentation to a student in each state. Eleanor’s essay on the question “Why has Australian commemoration of ANZAC Day increased in popularity in recent years?” was judged the best submission in Western Australia.

Eleanor has won a two-week all-expense paid trip to the commemorative ANZAC Day services at Gallipoli, as well as a preparatory trip to Canberra.
