Year 8 student Tamsin Cook has won the swimming Gold Medal for her age group at the Australian National Open Water Championships on February 18.

The five kilometre event featured 46 swimmers from around Australia. Tamsin’s winning time was 1:02:55.06 – four seconds clear of her closest rival.

Tamsin trains seven times a week averaging 45 kilometres. She began her stroke development from five years of age and has swum competitively since the age of nine.

In January 2012 Tamsin won four gold and two silver medals in the 13 year-old age group in the West Australian Age Championships. She also won two silver and one bronze in the Open Division.

Tamsin is currently training for the Australian Age National Championships in Brisbane in April.

“Winning this event was an amazing feeling after so many months of hard work and training,” Tamsin said. “It has given me a lot of confidence going into the National Championships.”

The Perth Modern School community wishes Tamsin all the best for her future swimming career.
