Congratulations to two Year 12 drama students, Aryan Gupta and Blake Mathieson, from the Class 2020 who were invited to audition for the Performing Arts Perspectives showcase – a huge achievement!
Performing Arts Perspectives is an annual educational event held at the Concert Hall showcasing outstanding creativity and diversity of student performance in dance, drama and music, providing benchmarks of excellence for students and teachers. Last year 2019 Drama student Arjun Kang was a part of the program; unfortunately, the event was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Aryan’s audition piece is Act V, Scene I from Macbeth playing the character Lady Macbeth. In this scene, Lady Macbeth is suffering from somnambulism and so full of guilt that they hallucinate hell, Macbeth and finally, the ghost of their dead child.
Drama and acting are Aryan’s catharsis:
“Inhabiting the space of characters and processing their emotions, feels almost like a therapeutic way to process my own. I am also interested in directing and play-writing as I enjoy creating pieces that test my abilities as an actor but also to create resistant pieces of media. My dream is to continue developing drama that reinterprets the western canon of high literature and explores marginalized voices, while also seeking bigger stages. Presenting these at higher levels would not only be incredibly gratifying for me, but I think is an important endeavor.”
Blake was awarded the Subject Exhibition in Drama. He is presenting two audition pieces, his Original Solo Performance and his scripted monologue: a Trumpesque re-interpretation of Bertolts Brechts’ The Resistiable Rise of Arturo Ui.
Blake said:
“Studying Drama in Year 12 was one of the best decisions I could have ever made. The ability to go to class and explore ideas in a physical space is something that is unique to Drama. The performances we got to watch and perform, the friends I made on along the way, and being pushed to do things I never thought I could do will stick with me for a lifetime.”
Well done to Drama teacher and Head of Arts and Technology Sally Floyd who has mentored these two young, talented thespians.
The School congratulates Aryan and Blake for their achievements to date and we look forward to seeing them on stage at the Concert Hall!
