James Chansbury in Year 10 has scored in the top one per cent of his age group in the VO2 MAX test. The VO2 MAX test is one of several tests used to determine an athlete’s cardiovascular fitness and performance capacity. This test measures the efficiency that the body can uptake, deliver and utilise oxygen and remove waste products during high-level exercise. The VO2 MAX test can also determine an athletes anaerobic threshold which is another very important measure of an athlete’s performance capacity.
Recently, the Year 11 PE Studies students had the opportunity to assist in conducting this test at UWA’s exercise and performance centre with their exercise physiologists. This gave James Chansbury the opportunity to put his training to the test and compare himself to other elite athletes. James’s final result was 65.9 mL.kg-1.min-1, placing him in the top one per cent for his age group!
As well as assisting in conducting the test and cheering James on, It was a great opportunity for the students to see UWA’s Sport Science campus and work with their exercise physiologists.
