A total of eight Perth Modern School teams comprising 23 students entered the RoboCup Junior competition on the weekend, competing in five categories – Mighty Maze, Soccer, Secondary Line Rescue, Open Line and Open Maze.
In RoboCup, participants must program and build their own robot to complete a set task.
Participant Paul Hodges (14) said he enjoyed the competition as he was really enthusiastic about programming.
“In our Open Rescue Line category, our robot had to follow a line avoiding obstacles and get to a chemical spill and find and rescue a can.”
“We came third in the open category as we had participated in the secondary competition for more than two years, so we were competing against Year 12 students.”
Kieran Ho (14) said he enjoyed being involved in RoboCup as it brought out the competitive side of him. His team came first in Secondary Line Rescue.
“This is my fourth year of being Involved,” Kieran said.
“My team spent lots of hours working on our robot at the Robotics Club at school so it was great feeling to win the trophy.”
Perth Modern School Robotics Club Coordinator Hari Chillapa said: “All students had a wonderful time. They not only helped each other but also demonstrated their leadership skills and sportsmanship by assisting and mentoring the teams from other schools.”
