The Perth Modern School P&C recently gifted us with a gel electrophoresis machine for our students to use in Biology, Human Biology, enrichment and extension. The machine uses an electrical current to separate DNA fragments depending on their size. In the real world, the machine’s applications include forensic uses in identifying individuals from DNA evidence left at a crime scene and establishing if an hereditary disease is present. Biotechnology forms an integral part of the ATAR program and is a growing field of employment. Here is a time lapse video showing the machine at work in a science classroom. A big thank you to our wonderful P&C for this great addition to the Science Department!
