WELCOME TO PERTH MODERN SCHOOL
The school is centrally located in Subiaco and welcomes gifted students in Years 7 to 12. Our school has a distinguished history dating back to 1911 when it was opened as WA’s first public senior secondary school. Perth Modern School combines its strong and relevant traditions with a well defined ethos and mandate to provide a differentiated curriculum that develops the skills and abilities of academically gifted students.
Our professional, enthusiastic, merit selected staff provide a broad range of subjects and activities that are tailored to the needs of gifted students. Current and former students have excelled in their academic, cultural, civic and sporting achievements.
Perth Modern School students work co-operatively with their teachers in a coeducational, stimulating, rewarding and safe learning environment which provides unique opportunities for academic enrichment and extension. Each student, through the fostering of individual talents and interests, is encouraged to realise their full potential and achieve success and fulfillment in a rapidly changing world.
Perth Modern School creates a supportive environment of high expectations where our gifted students can become resilient, well rounded high achievers with a keen social conscience and a desire to enrich and lead society in the future. Our students achieve consistently high academic results, excel in sporting pursuits and are part of a highly regarded music program which is recognised nationally and internationally.
In July 2011 Perth Modern School became an Independent Public School.
Welcome to the Perth Modern School website. Perth Modern School or ‘Mod’ as it known colloquially is Western Australia’s only fully academically selective school for gifted and talented students. The co-educational campus reflects both an exceptional academic environment and an exceptional ‘rounded’ experience. Students can be confident they are involved in the highest quality teaching and learning environment with a cohort of like-minded peers. Our school is filled with students who love life, love learning and love seeking out opportunities to further challenge themselves. It is our aim to provide varied academic, social, music, sporting, community service and leadership opportunities that help students broaden their horizons, develop their resilience and encourage their ability to think deeply and independently. Underpinning all we do is a focus on student wellness and developing a sense of belonging.
Our students undertake innovative programs in entrepreneurship and leadership to learn skills that will equip them for life. Our goal is to provide all students with the opportunity to perform to their personal best and to develop important life skills as good citizens and leaders in our global society. Students undertake an ‘Apprenticeship in Thinking’ in the Middle Years to learn 21st Century skills vital for global literacy such as creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving as well as communication and collaboration. A key aim is the teaching of structured visible thinking through Community of Inquiry, Thinking Routines and Habits of Mind. The program engages students conceptually in real world issues and differentiates learning in accordance with each student’s interests by providing opportunity for choice.
Gifted and Talented students want to be challenged and they enjoy trying new experiences and learning new skills. Students at Perth Mod have available to them a myriad of opportunities including School Tours to various national and international destinations with a focus on Music, the Arts, Languages, History, Community Service and STEAM to a variety of School Clubs on offer including aeronautics, chess, art, coding, dance, drama, gardening, mathematics and cheerleading, amongst many more. Students can also participate in various competitions such as the West Australian Debating League, Tournament of Minds, World Scholar’s Cup, Titration Stakes, Robocup, ICAS, Education Perfect etc. There are opportunities that cater to every individual. We also offer a wide variety of sports and physical education activities for all sporting abilities with students participating in numerous swimming and sports carnivals, interschool sport and team sports. Healthy Body, Healthy Mind is a core concept at Mod.
Our talented teaching staff, who are merit selected, are our greatest resource in the delivery of our innovative and accelerated curriculum for gifted students. They are dedicated professionals with a deep understanding and passion for their learning area, committed to bringing out the best in each student and developing the ‘whole’ child. Teaching at Perth Modern School is seen as an opportunity to achieve high levels of professional and personal satisfaction and we provide our teachers with the latest in information and communication technology and targeted professional development opportunities.
Perth Modern School is an extraordinary school – rich in tradition and firmly focused on the future. Our tradition of academic excellence spans many years and we are immensely proud of our Alumni, many of whom hold high positions locally, nationally and internationally. They excel in the fields of engineering, science, music, medicine, industry, law, academia, politics and the arts.
Having accepted our first intake of academically selected students in 2007, after a 50-year departure from selective entry, we are continually striving to build on our reputation of outstanding achievement. In 2016 and 2017 Perth Modern topped the State for achievement in the West Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). We are committed to the continuous improvement of the school’s facilities, equipment and professional practice to deliver leading edge learning to gifted students.
Perth Modern School has developed a strong and supportive network of parents, Modernians and community partnerships that has strengthened our learning program. In recent years, the School has established partnerships with the Telethon Institute for Kids, Harry Perkins Institute, City of Subiaco, Thinking Science Australia, WA Youth Theatre Co, the University of Western Australia, Curtin University and Edith Cowan University, amongst others. Our alumni association, the Modernian Society, through the Sphinx Scholarship Fund, has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support deserving students with academic scholarships.
Perth Modern School has made great advances in terms of facilities, teaching and learning, curriculum and student care, making it the school of choice for academically gifted students. In recent years we have added the Tyler McCusker Sports Centre and the Contemplation Garden and our current aim is to build a new state-of-the-art 700 seat multi-purpose auditorium.
