Achieving Balance was the theme for this year’s interactive and informative Focus Day for the Year 7 students. Several sessions were scheduled throughout the day with the aim of aiding our Year 7 students to adjust to their new environment, get to know their classmates and be informed of the support that is available for them in school.
Increasing one’s Wellness means being able to manage challenges with a sound mind and body. Our students participated in the various Wellness Sessions offered. The Art session gave students the opportunity to be completely immersed in a tranquil space that allowed their creative side to flow and create a colourful mandala. In the Yoga session, students had the chance to explore the connection between breath and body to bring about stillness as a respite from the usual buzz around them. They also experienced a Mindfulness Attention Training activity and learned the importance of being aware of one’s emotions and one’s ability to manage these emotions through breathing.
Aside from the Wellness Sessions, Year 7 students also participated in the exciting Team Challenges prepared for them by the Health and Physical Education Department. The various challenges allowed them to discover their strengths and rely on each other for support to successfully complete the assigned tasks within the time given. They learned the importance of working cooperatively and communicating effectively, key skills necessary for the 21st Century.
Finally, all students were oriented with the various ICT resources used in school which is central to the teaching and learning here at Perth Mod. They were assisted to set up their devices and student accounts to access Office 365. They were taught the basics of One Note and digitally managing online resources. Overall, it was an enjoyable day which most Year 7 students found fun and relaxing. So much so that their main request is to have more days just like these!
