Perth Modern School student Shermaine Chan wanted to help the wider Australian community through community service and came up with the idea of a charity drive collecting knitted squares to donate to the charity Knit One Give One (KOGO).
All the knitted squares are made into warm clothing that is then given to those in need in Australian communities. Shermaine collected around 200 squares donated from the Perth Modern community.
Shermaine, 13, said she didn’t expect such a great response to the charity drive.
“This charity donates to lots of different causes around Australia and I found it really inspirational all the stories of how people have benefitted,” Shermaine said.
“I collaborated with the school chaplain and she helped me advertise the program.”
“The knitted squares get turned into blankets and other items that people need.”
School Chaplain Natalie Fergusson said Sherman had approached her earlier this year with the idea of donating knitted squares.
“Shermaine was very determined to get this off the ground and made several visits to see me to chat about her ideas,” Natalie said.
“Shermaine did all the research about KOGO and emailed the company in Melbourne to get the necessary information about this charity.”
“Shermaine’s campaign was a great success. Not only did Shermaine discover a great charity in KOGO, but she also provided another avenue for students to contribute and give back to the community and also earn some valuable community service time outside of school hours.”
Principal pf Perth Modern School Lois Joll said Shermaine should be congratulated for showing great initiative in instigating such a successful campaign and for her incredible charitable spirit towards others.
